One Day in Lisbon: A Local's Itinerary You'll Actually Enjoy

One day in Lisbon is short. But if you plan it well, it's enough to fall in love with the city. Here's how we'd spend a single perfect day — at a Lisbon pace, not a Berlin one.

Morning · Alfama and the castle

Start in Alfama, the oldest neighborhood, before the heat and the crowds. Grab a bica (espresso) at a tasca, walk up through the tiled lanes, and time your arrival at the Castelo de São Jorge for opening at 9 a.m. You'll have the views and the peacocks to yourself for the first thirty minutes.

Late morning · Pastel de nata and a tram

Walk down through Mouraria to Pastelaria Santo António for a warm pastel de nata — better than the Belém queue and a third of the wait. Then catch the Tram 28 for a few stops up to Estrela or Graça (don't ride end-to-end; it's slow and very crowded).

Lunch · A real tasca, not a tourist menu

Skip the restaurants with photo menus. Look for a small place with paper tablecloths and a chalkboard prato do dia — usually €10-13 for soup, a main, and wine. Our favorites change weekly; ask a local.

Afternoon · Belém, the easy way

Take an Uber to Belém (10 minutes from the center) and see the Jerónimos Monastery and the Belém Tower from the outside — the queues to enter aren't worth it on a one-day trip. Then the original Pastéis de Belém for dessert.

Sunset · A miradouro and a glass of wine

Head back to Miradouro de Santa Catarina or Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara for sunset. Grab a glass of vinho verde at the kiosk and watch the city change color.

Evening · Fado and dinner

Dinner late — Lisbon eats at 8.30 p.m. or later. End the night with a short fado set at a small casa de fado in Alfama. Skip the dinner-and-show packages; they're for tour buses.
